Martial Arts for the Whole Family: Training Together

In today’s busy world, it can be hard to find quality time to spend with your family. Between school, work, sports, and other obligations, many families struggle to find meaningful ways to connect. That’s why more and more families are discovering the unique benefits of training in martial arts together, Taekwondo in particular, offers a powerful and rewarding path for family bonding, personal growth, and physical health.

At Chang’s Taekwondo South Surrey/Cloverdale/ Tsawwassen/Mission/ Aldergrove and Abbotsford, we’ve seen firsthand how training as a family can bring people closer while helping each member build discipline, confidence, and resilience. Whether you're looking to get fit, build your child's confidence, or just find a fun activity everyone can enjoy, Taekwondo has something to offer everyone.

Why Martial Arts Works for Families

Taekwondo is one of the few physical activities that spans generations. While many sports separate participants by age or ability, Taekwondo encourages participation across all age groups and creates an inclusive, supportive environment where everyone can learn and grow together.

Families who train together share more than just the training space; they share challenges, victories, and growth. Whether it's earning a new belt, learning a new form, or simply making it through a tough class, these experiences become shared accomplishments that bring families closer.

Parents often say that they gain a deeper appreciation for their child’s abilities and effort when they’re side-by-side in class. And children, in turn, feel empowered and motivated when they see their parents learning and striving just like them.

Training together can improve communication in your family. You will find yourselves discussing techniques, encouraging each other, and even practicing at home. This opens new ways of connecting and interacting without screens or distractions.

You may also find that respect and patience, two of the core values of Taekwondo, start showing up more naturally in everyday conversations at home.

Taekwondo is a fantastic way to promote an active lifestyle for the whole family. Regular practice helps improve cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and balance. Unlike gym memberships or fitness programs that cater to adults only, Taekwondo classes are designed to engage participants of all ages.

Instead of watching from the sidelines, parents can lead by example and get in shape while modeling the importance of health and discipline for their kids.

Classes typically include:

Common Concerns (And Why You Shouldn't Worry)

"I'm not flexible / in shape / coordinated."
No problem! Taekwondo is designed to meet you where you are. You’ll build flexibility and coordination over time, and there's no pressure to be perfect. Progress, not perfection, is what we celebrate.

"My child is too young / I’m too old."
We welcome students as young as 4 and have adults well into their 60s training with us. Classes are adjusted based on ability and age to ensure safety and enjoyment for everyone.

"We have a busy schedule."
We get it, life is hectic. That’s why we offer flexible class times and programs designed to work around your family’s calendar. You might be surprised how one or two classes a week can make a big difference.

We believe that Taekwondo isn’t just about kicking and punching, it’s about building better people, stronger families, and a more connected community. When families train together, they grow together; in strength, in discipline, and in love.

If you’ve been looking for a way to reconnect with your family, stay active, and learn something new together, give Taekwondo a try. The journey begins with one class and we’d be honored to take that first step with you.
